                  INDIAN AIR FORCE DAY 

    The Indian Air Force (IAF) is the air arm of the Indian Armed Forces. Its primary mission is to secure Indian airspace and to conduct aerial warfare during armed conflicts. Today India celebrates the 92nd anniversary of the Indian Air Force.

History of Indian Air force

    The Indian Air Force was formally constituted on October 8, 1932. In appreciation of its contributions during World War II, it was renamed the Royal Indian Air Force. The name 'Royal' was dropped once the country gained independence.

    The major role of the Indian Air Force is to safeguard Indian airspace and to conduct aerial warfare during a crisis. Apart from the wars of independent India and humanitarian operations, it has engaged in several United Nations peacekeeping missions. The Chief of Air Staff (An Air Marshal) is the commander of India's air forces.

    Every year on October 8, India recognizes Indian Air Force Day to honor the servicemen and pilots who have sacrificed their lives for the nation and to commemorate the establishment of the Indian Air Force (IAF).

  • fourth largest air force in the world, the IAF boasts a fleet of over 1,700 aircraft and employs approximately 140,000 personnel.
  • The highest air force station in India is situated in the Himalayas, all the way up at the Siachen glacier at a whopping height of 22,000 feet above sea level.
  • Air Marshal Arjan Singh is the first and only Indian Airforce officer with a 5-star rank.
