Why is National Integration Day celebrated?

    National Integration Day is observed on November 19 every year.This day honours the birth anniversary of former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who during her term in parliament, pushed hard for national integration in India and sought to further the country's diversity and togetherness.


Some facts about Indira Gandhi

  • Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi was born on 19 November 1917 in Allahabad to the first Prime Minister of India, JL Nehru.
  • In 1938, Indira joined the Indian National Congress Party
  • She later married Feroze Gandhi in 1942 and had two sons, Rajiv and Sanjay.
  •  She served as the Prime Minister of India from 1966 to 1977 and again from 1980 until her assassination in 1984. 
  • On October 31, 1984, Gandhi was assassinated by her two bodyguards outside her home, who had sought revenge for what happened at the Golden Temple.
