Today December 28 is celebrated as Indian national congress day. The Indian National Congress (INC), India’s largest opposition party, marked its 138th foundation day on December 28. 

History

Indian national congress is a political party in india. It founded on 28 December 1885, it was the first modern nationalist movement to emerge in the British Empire in Asia and Africa. After 1920, under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi, the Congress became the principal leader of the Indian independence movement.The first session was attended by 72 delegates from all the Indian provinces. There were 54 Hindus, 2 Muslims and the rest were Jain and Parsi members.The president of the first session was Womesh Chandra Bonnerjee.The Indian National Congress became the dominant political party in the country post-independence in 1947. It held power nationally from 1952 until 1977.

After Jawahar Lal Nehru died in 1964, Lal Bahadur Shastri was appointed prime minister in June 1964. Shastri was criticised for his approach to dealing with India’s economic problems. So many sessions and achievements are done at the period.

Congress gained popularity and broke political barriers during Indian National movements.From the moderate phase of congress to Gandhian Era ,it witnessed a lot of setbacks and transitions till Indian Independence.It played a huge role in giving an identity to Indian people as well as politically educating people against the British colonial imperialist power.

Retired British Indian Civil Service (ICS) officer Allan Octavian Hume founded the Indian National Congress in order to form a platform for civil and political dialogue among educated Indians.
