Why do we celebrate International Rock Day?

International Rock Day is widely celebrated on July 13th annually for people to learn more about rocks and their importance.The Rock or stone is a naturally occurring solid aggregate of one or more minerals or mineraloids. For example, the common rock granite is a combination of the quartz, feldspar and biotite minerals.

The Earth’s outer solid layer, the lithosphere, is made of rock. Rocks have been used by mankind throughout history. From the Stone Age, rocks have been used for tools. The minerals and metals found in rocks have been essential to human civilization.



History of the day 

International Drop A Rock Day was originally founded by The Word Rocks Project in 2015. It brings thousands of people around the world together for a common cause. The sponsors, which now include both The Word Rocks Project and The Kindness Rock Project, created this unofficial holiday. Annually they release theme words or phrases to be used in the celebration. 

Significance

The significance of this day lies in appreciating how rocks and stones have served humanity for centuries, from the creation of ancient tools, monuments, and buildings to their role in art, jewelry, construction, and scientific research. From the majestic mountains and rocky coastlines to precious gems and fossils, rocks are deeply woven into both nature and culture.

Why do we celebrate the rock?

The main aim of International Rock Day is to raise global awareness about the importance of rocks and encourage people around the world to learn more about rocks.

Theme of the year 

The theme for International Drop a Rock Day on July 3, 2025 is Hope, according to the Kindness Rocks Project Facebook page. This day encourages people to paint and hide rocks with messages of hope for others to find.
